Oil is leaking from the seal behind the fly wheel, has any one tried to fit the modern Crankshaft oil seal kit with the Graphite cord seal? as a replacement for the original scroll type. Should the cord be oiled or maybe cut and fitted to each half of the flange?  Philip

        Philip,

Yes I have fitted one with reasonable success.

Ideally, from a sealing point of view, the packing should not be cut and the single joint should be located at the top – i.e. in the centre of the top shell/cap.  I found this was best achieved by fitting the lower cap first then offering the top cap to the assembly and trimming the ends of the seal by trial and (hopefully no) error to achieve a tight joint.  Assembly is clearly not a simple operation and, I think, best done with the engine out for maximum accessibility.

Additional lubrication should not be necessary but a very light coating of grease to the back of the seal may help it bed into the caps because it is important that the sealing element is correctly seated and firmly retained from the start to ensure the on-going integrity of the seal once it has been run for a while.

          Hello Bernie,

Many thanks for the advice, I lightly oiled the cord and have been able to get the two halves of the oils seal holder in place, with cork gaskets behind. Not easy. However I find that the design of the holder means it is almost impossible two do up the two top nuts of the lower half as the thick ali webs mean you cannot get a spanner onto them, did you find a solution?

            Phillip,

I butchered (ground down) a spanner “to suit” – but it was still not easy. to access those particular fixings

Last year I fitted the corded type crankshaft oil seal in place of the scroll type. Mine has not sealed too well and lets oil passed. I wondered if you had more success and that my problem is due to an error in fitting it?

Currently I have the gearbox off the car to replace the drive shaft seals. I have removed the corded seal and am wondering if I should refit the scroll seal. It was very hard to make the corded seal fit properly.

                Philip,

Sorry for late response – if it is not too late I would recommend the original scroll – especially if you can remove the flywheel for access.  This will allow you to ensure centralisation – very important – as well as allowing you to get at the fixings.

I would also suggest fitting a new one if possible because they do usually get distorted once fitted.  (And, yes, I may even have one and will look if you are interested).
