Finally dropped the engine and gearbox in last night. So far, so good. Cranked the engine with no plugs and got 45psi. I think I should be happy with that.

The original oil bath air filter is an ugly cumbersome affair. There must be better options out there. Any ideas?

The oil bath air filter was fitted to a lot of “Colonial” Slough Tractions. It was fitted to some, if not all supplies to Australia, South, East and Central Africa and probably elsewhere, where conditions were dusty.

My South African L15 is fitted with one. It is bulky and you have to be careful to avoid it rattling on the bonnet. However, it does have the advantage of not requiring a filter element. The parts lists do not show this filter but do show the French equivalent as well as the cartridge units. I am sure that you will have no trouble finding one. Have you tried Chris at spares?

          Norman,

Which carb. do you have – if it is the early 35FAI type (as illustrated in the workshop manual) I have a couple of “Bullet” type filters plus a “Frog” connector if you would be interested.

Unfortunately, these filters are not suited to the later – 32PBIC – Carbs.

Hi Bernie, I’m fitting a new Solex 32 PBIC – it’s a knock off copy bought from CAS.

So I guess that rules me out….

I had the tropical unit on my Light 15 which came from South Africa. No element and you change the oil in it whenever you change the crankcase oil. More often if conditions warrant, but I would keep it. It worked well on my car. Almost no intake noise, too.

Norman with a 32 PBIC it should be easier to find an air cleaner, try James Geddes, he has broken a couple of cars. Chris at Club spares got a lot of parts from Andy Burnet so it’s worth giving him a call as well. Failing that to get you on the road CAS do a ‘Universal’ one https://www.cas-shop.com/en/product/universal-airfilter-o52/ OK doesn’t look original but would get you going.
