      I sent my just working Lucas M418G CJ26 starter motor off for overhaul and the report says it is basically scrap. Does anyone have a starter motor they would be willing to sell me please. 12V and Lucas for preference, but hey as I am in desperate need, w.h.y.?

      I am in Oxfordshire and do not mind one to overhaul or a working example, first class or scruffy, I am going to Spain and France on holiday in a few weeks and hand starting would be tedious!

      Your help would be appreciated, thank you

        12v Lucas are hard to find now as they rotate opposite direction to everything else. If you get stuck, you can get a new modern one which will fit.

        There is a post somewhere from a member who has one fitted

            Please be aware that this is not a personal recommendation but I am told that those who convert Fench cars to 12V often retain the 6V starter.

            I understand, the starting is as good – if not better – than with a 12V unit and, used “diligently”- i,e. not churmed ober endlessly,  they appear not to suffer from the experience (- they being the starter motors, not the owners).

              I had a 6v starter on a 12v car and it did work until driving down to the 80th in France when having to ‘churn’ it due to the hot weather to get it started again after stopping for petrol, it gave up the ghost on the rally field as we were about to set off home….

              As Bernie says a 6v will work on a 12v system, but heed his warning.

                Hello Bernie and David,

                That is a good thought. I have run my Austin 7 for the last ten years with its 6 volt starter operating on 12v. I have completed over 25,000 miles and although I did have to replace the brushes 2 years ago it has always started the car beautifully. OK where can I get a french 6V starter in ok order?

                  Current FP … Terence McAuley is offering both a 12V and a 6V starter.

                  <span style=”line-height: 1.5;”>In addition, in the previous issue Andy Burnett was advertising a 12V unit.</span>

                  Otherwise go to French websites – I can probably give some links if required

                      Jack – if you do opt for a 6V unit you will find the body is considerably fatter than the 12V.  On a Light 15/Legere it does not sqeeze past the jambonea so you will have to jack the engine up on the right to get it in.  I usually plce a long wooden lever under the back end of the manifold and then pivot against another wooden block (wrapped in cloth to prevent marking the painteork) on the jamboneau.

                      This can be done without  removing the box covering the rear engine mounting on the bulkhead , but the levering is made much easier if that box is removed.

                        Hi Jack,

                        John Moon has fitted a new high torque 12v starter to his car and is very pleased with it, I think he may have done a piece for the magazine not long ago.
