I replaced my failed gearbox in 2018 with a reconditioned unit.

It has worked perfectly until today when the pulley that comes off the engine stopped turning leaving the fan and dynamo stationery.

I can turn the pulley by hand. The large nut on the end of the pulley is still in place. There is no play forwards or backwards in the pulley and it appears all in order.

      Any ideas anyone?

The shaft is driven off the camshaft. Assuming the engine runs the camshaft is turning. The shaft is connected to the camshaft through an Oldham coupling of Perfo engines and a splined coupling on 11D engines.

I would imagine the change was made to avoid this happening – so is yours a Perfo engine?

This link goes to Jose Franssen’s page which shows how this goes together:

Either the coupling itself has broken or the dog has snapped off one of the shafts – hopefully not the camshaft.

That happened to me in my 54 11B- the splines were worn out from removing the gearbox many times over the years. Since then, I remove the shaft before installing the gearbox and reinstall it after the box is bolted to the engine.

aha – I was thinking it happened on the earlier design and the move to splines was to fix the problem.

            Thanks Larry.
