Alan,
The carb on your car is a 35FAIE. This is the model shown in the illustrations on plate 21 in the workshop manual. That reference is probably marked at the top on one side.
It has a 2-part body and the top is tapped to accept the two fixing screws for the air cleaner/silencer “frog” connector.

Hi
A bit of an update thank you for the information, the traction is going well but the carburettor has excessive wear in the butterfly spindle and the car will not idle. As you say the Traction is fitted with a Solex 35 FAIE . What does the “E” stand for, I have seen Solex 35FAI for sale? Frassens list the correct carb as being a Solex 35 FPAI another option may be Solex 35FATIP but that I think it is an outside chance any information would be a help and information on carbs for sale also
regards
Alan
Alan you could get it professionally rebuilt including the spindle rebushed etc. somewhere like the Carburettor Hospital http://www.carburettorspecialists.com/ others may be available 🙂
To help the search it’s listed as fitted to some other cars as well so you could try the individual mark clubs for more info/repair kits:
Solex 35FAIE; 35RFAIE
As fitted to:
Bedford WD: OW, OX, OY, OXA, OXD, OXC 1940-1947 35RFAIE
Bedford QL3 FWD 1940-1947 35RFAIE
Citroen Light 15 1946-49 35FAIE
Morris Commercial 5 Ton 4 Cyl 1945-53 35FAIE
Shelvoke & Drewry Freighter 3.6 Litre 1947-1952 35RFAIE
Shelvoke & Drewry Fork Lift 1952-1967 35RFAIE
Standard 14HP Sedan 1946-48 35FAIE
Triumph 18TR Roadster 1946-1949 35FAIE
Triumph 18T Saloon 1947-1949 35FAIE
EDIT: there is a French discussion online Here: http://forumgmt.fr/viewtopic.php?id=9907 if you open in Google then right click translate to English if your French is like mine it does say in 1 post “Nota Bene: Ma 11B 1939 is equipped with a carburetor Solex 35 FATIP. (But he still misses to this day, the intake muffler ref 480342 type bazooka)”
Good luck with the research.
Hi David
Thank You for the information could you let me know what vehicles the Solex 30FPAI was fitted to as I think that is the correct one but I have the “bazooka” type air filter, It does get complicated
Thanks
Alan
Apparently this place (Carburetter Exchange) in Leighton Buzzard is run by an ex-Solex employee
http://www.carbex.demon.co.uk/index.html
Solex were taken over by Zenith – and Burlen supply parts for Zeniths and Solex. http://www.zenithcarb.co.uk
Either of those could probably break the code.
Chris
I think the T in FATIP means it has a temperature controlled choke.
Chris
You could be right Chris, James Geddes had a pre war Normale in his workshop (Traction Repairs) and that had a Solex fitted with a temperature controlled choke. He might have a picture of it Alan if you contact him.

Manually and Thermally Operated) O – Zero Starter (Manually Operated)
B – B Type Carburettor OS Offset 0o F Strangler
C – Monobloc P – Pump
D – Right Hand Carburettor R – Governor
E – Economy Device S – Self Starter
F – Die Cast T – Thermostarter (Thermally Operated)
G – Left Hand Carburettor V – Vertical Carburettor

The members section has all this under the Solex Instruction manual booklet.
Does anyone look at these pages??
Happy tuning!
Alistair
I do – That is where I got it from!

That’s two people then!!
Yes, but what is a “B” type carb? What does it refer to?
Maybe a dual port carb as opposed to a simple carb?? Just a thought.
I don’t think so- our later Tractions have a 32PBIC, Pump, B type, Downdraft, Monobloc. I assume P means the accelerator pump. But “B type” doesn’t tell me anything. My 1960 Saab has a similar carb but without an accelerator pump called a 40AI. No P designation- its’ similar to the 32PBIC but with a blank plate where the pump would be.
