      Hi,

      Does anyone know the socket size for the Oil Sump Drain Nut, Traction Avant. In the past I have used an old fashioned adjustable Monkey Wrench, to drain the oil. The Monkey Wrench has seen better days, and is now getting difficult to adjust to required size,  time to purchase a proper fitting socket. Is there a torque setting for this nut or do you just tighten with all the power you can muster.

        22mm Davy is what I use on mine though I have new ‘magnetic’ drain plugs (from TOC spares) fitted to both the engine sump and gearbox. IIRC the original plugs had been abused over the years and weren’t such a good fit for the spanner.

        As for tightening, I always use a new copper washer and tighten until it ‘stops’  🙂

          Just to ‘confuse’ things, I dug out the original gearbox drain plug and that is 21mm. I had the same issue when I changed the coolant drain on the side of the engine block, the new one required a spanner which was one size larger…..

            Hi David

            Thanks for you help, perhaps I should remove the drain plug, (before the funeral of my old Monkey Adjustable) then order a new Drain Nut from TOC spares. The engine oil Drain on my Traction looks very new and has a hard plastic seal ring, but measuring around 40mm Nut size.

              Yes, the gearbox filler and drain plug, the engine block drain plug and later (11D) engine oil drain plugs are all nominally 21mm.

              If you have not got a “normal” socket then a sparkplug socket is 21mm and will do the job admirably!!

              If possible, in order to minimise the chance of damage to the plugs, I prefer to use a pure hexagonal socket rather than a 12-point jobby.
