      Hi Guys

      In a word HELP !!

      Trying to fit a new front windscreen rubber(the one that sits on the opening windscreen).

      After consultation with other members and watching loads of videos I still can not get a single definitive answer , so here goes a effort to make the answer simple

      Viewing the rubber at the bottom of the screen and looking from the drivers side (LHD) should the rubber curve towards the bonnet (ie to the left as viewed )or should it curve towards the windscreen opening (ie to the right as viewed??)

      Anybody out there  know ???????

        I had that issue some years back now but the answer is:

        Curve towards the frame (which is counter-intuitive 🙂 ) and there is a diagram showing this out there somewhere but I can’t find it atm.

          Hi Dave

          This is the way I  fitted to the screen in the first place, however ran in to all sorts of problems.

          Following enquiries to club members and looking at their cars the plot got thicker, indeed if I fit the rubber the way I was told, if pushed one way ….fine, pushed the opposite way ….it falls out!!!

          So it appears you and me are right , others ……not so sure !!!

          Off down the workshop to fit the rubber again ……this time hopefully for the last time ??

          Thanks for your help, will try and let you know of the outcome , maybe if this old fool can learn to work a computer there may be pictures ??

            Looking at this image you would think that the rubber had been fitted ‘curve out’.

            Well when it was fitted December 2012 it was actually fitted ‘curve in’ and over the years with heat etc. it has eventually  taken on the shape of the car frame.

            The screen did take some effort to refit to the car due to the access for the bolts and IIRC it took 3 of us to push it into place and fit the bolts!

            It has never leaked though but looking at the shape now and how hard it ‘feels’, it’s maybe time to replace it again….

            Sorry, can’t find that diagram online though I’ll keep looking.

              Hi Dave

              I agree with you, I think the screens I have been looking at are the same as the one in the picture hence the confusion

              So I have fitted the rubber the way I had it in the first place……will try to fit the screen at the weekend, all being well

                Hi Ken

                I’m attaching pics which may help. The first three show the seal currently on my Traction. This is the original seal from 1950 and is about to be replaced.  The last pic shows the cross section of the new one I have, courtesy of Renel. Apologies for the poor quality pics!  Looking at the seal it appears that the inner visible part of the seal is wider than the outer so that when looking at the new seal in cross section this would mean that the blade section should be curving towards the frame surround. This appears logical as it means that as you tighten the clamp the rubber is compressed against the frame giving a good seal. My current seal is 70 years old and while it is still flexible it has bent the other way – and it leaks like a seive!
