I’m rebuilding my 11D engine due initially to uneven compression and coolant escaping out the front of the head gasket.
To my surprise on stripping it down I’ve found it’s all new components inside. Clearly the pistons and liners are new. The crank is polished and its all perfectly clean inside…. well except for one significant problem, the oil pickup mesh was completely blocked. This has caused the big ends to pick up on 2 & 3, no crank damage the journals polished back up fine and all measurements are standard. I can only assume this was due to the engine sitting for many years.
The low compression was simply stuck rings. They freed off as soon as I pulled the pistons. The leak I believe was due to the liners being set too high. Overall its clearly all new components but poorly put together?
Anyway I’m now reassembling it with all new bearings and the crank end float is 1.2mm. I believe it should be around half that, could someone confirm this?
Where should I get shims, does anyone have any laying around or do I need to import them?
