I have fiddled with cars and bikes for the best part of 65 years but have only recently come across references to the “Hot Spot” in relation to carburation.

I have been reading 1950’s Citroënian club magazines and keep finding mention of the hot spot and now I find a reference in the Jan/Feb FP in Steve Reed’s article on cleaning his carb.

Can somebody fill in this glaring knowledge gap for me, please?

Carburettors require a hot spot to help the vaporisation of the fuel or they would ice up especially in cold weather. This can be done by contact with the exhaust manifold as in the Traction or some cars pass hot water from the radiator through the inlet manifold, common with SU carbs. My Light 15 has SU carbs without any heating, so I guess the heat rising from the exhaust manifold is enough.

        Cheers Richard

          Thanks Richard

Now I can talk about hot spots with confidence 🙂
