Does anyone have experience of fitting a thermostat to the radiator or anywhere on the cooling system ?
you can get thermostats that fit into the top hose, I also drilled and tapped the water pump housing to take a 1/2″ hose adaptor which feeds the cab heater, with a stat fitted it speeds up the heater output as its not circulating around a cold radiator until stat opens.

Hi Joseph,
Copy and paste for a stat on ebay. You will find cheaper but this seller has put dimemsions on. The combined stat and heater take off from CTA is now over £100!!!!!!!

I fitted a Renault 4 Thermostat – like the one Philippe lists. A simple firm push fit into the top hose. A jubilee clip on the outside gives additional security. You will probably want to fit a thermometer at the same time for peace of mind though.

I used a thermostat housing from a Rover fitted in the top hose. It has the advantage of a bypass hose which I have routed through a heater and may help if the thermostat jams.

Nigel, which side of the fuel pump did you drill and tap ?
Hi Joseph
I’m assuming you meant to say water pump, attached pictures shows the outlet to the heater and the temp transmitter as fitted to the water pump mount housing rather than the actual pump as I suggested in my first post, hope this helps. you can also see how the inline stat is secured just above the outlet with a clip and heater return is just tee’ed into the bottom hose via a control valve.

Thank you Nigel, yes I did mean water pump of course ! Did you drill and tap for 1/4″ BSP or a metric size ?
If I remember correctly I used a fine thread metric because the housing wall is not very thick.

Thank you for your contributions and advice. The heating system now works well.
