I am having a problem with the SEV pump on my 1957 Traction as it seems to be incapable of pumping sufficient fuel to keep the engine running at idle speeds but works to some extent if the engine is revved.  I have tried various solutions including cleaning all the jets on the carb, re-setting the ignition, cleaning the plugs and  adjusting the tappets again, all without any improvement.  Can anyone suggest a 6 volt pump that has proved to work without failure. AES have an SU 6 volt pump, has anyone tried it  or is there another solution ?

        Joseph,

It sounds as if you ought to check the fuel pump itself … faulty non-return valve? … damaged diaphragm? … bent or worn cam follower?

I do have an additional switched electric pump on my car although, in general, the mechanical unit is more than adequate.  I only ever use the electric one to prime the system after the car has been stood for a very long time and all fuel has drained from the mechanical pump (it saves all the tedious hand pumping).  It is fitted in-line with, and just before, the mechanical pump.  Should it ever become necessary, it is perfectly capable of being run permanently.

There are a number of 6V pumps on eBay …

…. and, although none appear to be exactly the same model as mine, I would expect most if not all to be suitable.

          Carb

          Hello Joseph

Like Bernie  says, sounds like a mechanical fuel pump issue.

Don’t know if this will help, I added an asbestos type mat to the underside of the heat shield, I think there is something normally fitted there but mine was missing,  a thick plastic spacer between carb and manifold, an electric fuel pump and inline filter fitted onto the jambonneau and done away with the mechanical pump completely , also replaced fuel lines engine end with rubber hoses. This all helps with keeping the heat out of the fuel.

I often run my engine for extended periods at a high RPM (2000 rpm) stationary with bonnets closed and the theory being it dispels any moisture that may build up in the engine and surrounding areas through lack of use and not had a hot starting issue.

            Thank you Bernie and Nigel.

The eBay link you sent Bernie comes up as a relay is this what you intended ? Is that an in line filter fitted before the punp

I have a new heat shield under the carb that I bought in France.  What make of electric fuel pump have you used Nigel ?

Ooops! – trying to do too many things at once. Sorry.

              Correct link …

              https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=6+volt+fuel+pump&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=6+volt+fuel+pump

If it is still wrong, just Google “6 Volt fuel pump”. Simples!

There is a non-return valve, not a filter but, if you have any doubts about the cleanliness of the fuel tank, a filter would be advisable.

Your problem does not seem to be vaporisation so I guess your heatshield is doing it’s job.

                Hi Joseph

I can’t remember what make/model of pump it was except mine is 12 volts, I did make a point of buying a better quality unit as the cheaper ones are crap and not last, this is born out from experience in the fork truck world with many mechanical pump failures being replaced with electric pumps and the cheaper ones subsequently failing.

You might want to try this one from Jose Franssen. I have one on my 49 BL and have never had a problem with it. It also comes in a vertical configuration. I think the best thing is to put the filter between the tank and the pump.

If you do opt for a replacement mechanical pump I strongly recommend you ensure it has a priming lever.

The picture is n9t very clear but the Franssen one does appear to have a lever.  I would want to confirm that before buying.

I have one of these fitted to my Big 6. Works well and UK sorced. Has a glass bowl so you can see if it is working (and a lever). Appears to be out of stock at the moment but worth a call.

The one I put from Jose Franssen does have a priming lever- A friend has the one with the glass bowl on his 11B, it interferes with the movement of the shift rods. I think its more suited to the 15/6.
