Brake Fluid

The original fluid for a Traction is glycol-ether based and the current equivalent is designated as “Dot 4” which, when new, is a clear liquid although it tends to become yellowy-brown in time.

Modern brake fluids should be made to agreed international standards and so any reputable brand ought to be acceptable.

However, some owners (I’m one) have opted to change to a silicon based fluid which is Dot 5 and is purple in colour.  The latter has the advantage of not absorbing water which can be a bonus in a low mileage vehicle or one that is not regularly used for fairly long periods.

The important thing is the two different types of fluid cannot be mixed and the complete system needs to be completely purged if changing from one to the other.  In addition, I have heard a very few reports of problems with silicon fluid in old brake hoses but my own experiences have always been good.

Hi,

I’m considered switching to silicon fluid as I need to renew the braking system and I’m likely to replace all hoses and brake cylinders.

My main hesitation is the risk of old fluid remaining if I fail to purge correctly. What’s the best way to purge the system of old fluid? What steps, equipment, chemicals are best for this?
