      Hi folks

I have a 1950 Paris-built 11BL that has seen some changes over the last 76 years.  For instance, at some point the starter knob has been replaced with a push-button.

There is a mystery tell-tale lamp (which doesn’t seem to do anything) fitted to the left of my indicator switch.  Is this original to the car?  If so, what *should* it do?  If not original,  what was originally fitted in this position?

Also, how do you remove the knob from the Ignition advance control?  I cannot see any grub-screw holding it on.

      thanks

      Paul

That “mystery light” is not original but do check to see if it’s connected to anything. You may want to wire it to the high beam circuit so you have an indicator. To remove the knob from the spark advance, you need to remove it from the dashboard and you will see how it comes apart.  Installing a push button for the starter is fairly common, I have that on one of mine. I assume that the push button is connected to a relay?

          Hi Larry

          Thanks for your reply.

That is exactly what I have in mind, but I’m also really interested to know what would have originally been in that position on the dashboard which, presumably, is missing from my car.

Hmm….    To remove it from the dashboard, it looks like the knob has to be removed first; the nut and washer that secures it to the dashboard are behind the knob.  Unless I’m being really stupid (which is not out of the question)….

Hi Paul- That light which you can use as a high beam indicator may well have been a high beam indicator. To remove the spark advance you need to take the nut and washer off that are behind the dashboard. Once you have it out you will see how it comes apart. But, actually if you undo the chrome nut on the front of the dash, the knob will come out. It’s just a little easier to remove the whole thing.
