Hi. Having problems with the carburettor flooding and want to strip and check it but first want to get the correct service kit , it’s on a 1950 Slough 1911 , Solex 35 FAIE L48 . grateful for any information. Looking on line I noticed that one side of my carb is slightly different to the ones shown. This is my carb

and this is the type shown on line . Will this effect which service kit I need .

I have the following kit which I purchased “in case” many years ago when I had my Légère”. It is now surplus to requirement.
It appears to be complete and definitely has a new needle valve for the float chamber.
I would accept £20 for it.

If you are interested in both this and the window mechanism, per other correspondence, I could send them together.

Hi. What’s the height setting for the float on a solex 35 FAIE and where is the measurements take . photo attacked. André

Unfortunately, information for this particular carb is not amongst the documents available on the Forum archive.
However, I did find the following on the interweb ….
Solex fai manual – The Solex FAI is a classic self-starting downdraught carburetor, commonly found on vintage vehicles like classic Rovers and early Peugeots. It relies on a unique bi-starter (choke) mechanism and precise idle jet circuits to meter fuel.
Specific information for the FAI model is detailed in its dedicated Solex FAI Parts & Operators Manual. General operation, tuning, and servicing procedures span several specific areas:
1. The Starting Device (Choke)The FAI has a self-starting mechanism rather than a traditional air-valve choke.Operation: Pulling the starter cable opens a secondary air/fuel passage and bypasses the main throttle.Important: When operating this device during a cold start, the throttle butterfly must remain fully closed. Pumping the gas pedal will cause the engine to stall.
2. Tuning and AdjustmentsIdle Mixture: If the engine surges or stumbles and drips fuel when the throttle is opened, the mixture is too rich.Float Levels: The fuel level inside the chamber is factory-fixed. If you change to higher fuel pump pressures, a smaller needle valve or different thickness washers under the needle valve may be required to compensate.Jets: Standard tuning requires verifying that the correct air and fuel jets are installed for your specific engine size.
3. Maintenance
the ‘float height’ is regulated by the thickness of the washer under the needle valve.
According to items 2 and 3 above, as long as no big change has been made to fuel pump pressure, the combination of washer and valve in a service kit should therefore give the correct shut-off height.
I had fitted an electric pump on thd Légère, mainly for priming purposes. When running it did not flood the carb, so I think the fuel pressure is therefore not quite so critical and you are less likely to require a different needle valve height.

Thanks Bernie . Thanks for the information. I think the mixture is too rich , plugs are sooty, the previous owner had a new fuel pump fitted so this may have an effect , The valve shut off section on the float has a slight wear where it contacts the valve. The valve is closed when the float is horizontal in the chamber , I’ve no Idea if the correct combination of jets are fitted . The washer on the valve is 1.35 mm thick , I will fit a thinner washer 1 mm or 0.8 mm to compensate for the wear on the float cam and see if this reduces the sooty plugs. If this doesn’t work try adjusting the mixture once I’ve found out how to do this .

I suggest start by adjusting the mixture which is a slotted & knurled headed screw, which runs through a compression coil spring. It looks similar to the throttle adjustment screw but goes direct into the carb body.
Screwing it in weakens the mixture, and a quarter turn can make a big diffence.
Having stripped the carb I found that two fixing hole threads on the casting are stripped. The flange on the float cover case is bent and does not sit flat on the float casing. Does anyone have an old 35 FAIE with a serviceable float case cover for sale. Otherwise I will need to get a serviceable carb. It’s a Solex 35 FAIE, I had a look on line and could find no replacements. The club spares show a Solex carb 34PBIC, I believe this will fit my manifold subject to a use a proper thick insulating spacer and gaskets underneath the 34 PBIC, I have the torpedo type air filter so would need to adapt the cast aluminium casing on this to fit on the carb. Has anyone done this carb change.
André
I think I may have one.
I’m currently enjoying the delights of the 50th Anniversary Dorset Rally but shall check when I get home at the weekend.

Confirming personal email sent due to website outage …
Changing to a 32PBIC will entail changing inlet manifold and air filter assembly.
I have a complete 35FAI which I am prepared to sell.

…. and, although it is not the route I would choo
se were I in your shoes, I have a 32PBIC inlet manifold I could sell.
You will have to assemble it to your current exhaust section with a new hotspot gasket and then have the port faces machined to ensure all are flat and parallel. This will ensure a good seal at all ports, and importantly, eliminate the risk of breaking the manifold flanges if they are any height differences between the two sections.
