Does putting the pin into the flywheel set the engine to TDC on the compression stroke of No1 cylinder ❓

It is like tumbleweed city on here at the moment – was hoping for torrents of advice now I am into the engine.

So I printed of a degree wheel and made a pointer. I can see the No1 piston so I measured the angle clockwise and then anticlockwise and averaged them, cut it in half and supposedly that is TDC. Wasn’t convinced so in the end I took off the timing chain cover and checked the two little dots on the crank and camshaft gears. They were lined up perfectly.

So I then checked the orientation of the distributor (or top of oil pump) and this was 180 degrees the wrong way. So I did bugger it up yesterday when I was doing this upside down.

Distributor only fits 1 way as the driving ‘dog’ is offset. If I remember correctly on a Perfo engine (standing on it’s sump aka the right way up) with a standard distributor or ‘powernition’ one, at TDC the rotor arm is on no 1 cylinder and points to the front of the engine at circa 20 to the hour (using a clock face as a guide), but when I fitted a 123 distributor TDC for no 1 was at circa 5-10 past the hour.

Very confusing if your rebuilding an engine with alternate parts

The procedure for fitting the oil pump is that the groove should be parallel with the engine casing and the thinner offset should be towards the engine. So from my photo the white tipped part is the thinner offset and the groves are parallel – I am hoping this is correct. 😕
