Could someone explain how the shaft driving the fan pulley is meant to be sealed? There was no sign of any seals when this was disassembled, so is it just packed with grease?

Also, what’s that little hole for on the right side of the casting?

      Thanks

If you install a shielded bearing at the shaft’s front end, you can toss out the grease fitting and install a plug. I’ve done that one and the forward bearing on the water pump and now, no more ugly built-up grease around the water pump shaft.

Whare did you get the bearings. Sounds likes a good mod.

There is no seal. The hole is to take the split pin for the castellated nut “D” in the attached photo.

There is an article of Water Pump refurbishment in Vol 10 1985/86 Issue 4 Sep of Floating Power available to members only on the TOC website

Thanks Den. Unfortunately the file for that issue seems to be damaged as I get an error message when I try to open it. Other issues are working for me.

I got the bearings from Brad Nauss in the U.S.A. http://www.bradnaussauto.com/ The water pump bearing number is BB6302 SKF, the aux shaft bearing is BB6204, It doesn’t say on the invoice but I think it’s also an SKF. I think any bearing supplier would have them, you just need to specify that you need them shielded on both sides.

Bruce, I have emailed you a copy of the article. Just for everyone’s peace of mind I did check that you are a member of the TOC (non-members can join this forum for a short period).

Just to clarify, ‘shielded’ in the UK basically means pre greased and sealed for life. The club now gets the water pumps overhauled using these maintenance free bearings for the fan blade end.

Have taken note of the numbers and will keep an eye out tomorrow at another Bourse in Auch.

It would be good to have a section on here that details what mods can be done when a certain item needs to be worked on.

I did my front wheel bearings using sealed units and now the water pump.

So a “if you are renovating the water pump” it is a good idea to ……… πŸ˜€

I’m sure that if anyone would care to “Write it up” the Floating Power Editor would be happy to include in the “Tech Torque” section.

BTW, the latest version (4.3) of the “Tech Torque DVD” is available to download in its “BETA” form if anyone would like to give it a try.
The files contain all of the Tech Torque articles published in “FP” from 1976 to 2014.

Thanks to Den’s time and effort the search capability has been improved and more recent files are now available.

Thanks all for the help. Yes, I am a member – not trying to get away with anything πŸ˜€ The technical article library is a great resource, as is tripyrenees’ excellent photodocumentary of his restoration.

I’ve sent the info on to Bob, maybe he will post in Floating Power. Glad to help! πŸ™‚

Darn – I got excited about the TOC Tech CD….. shame it is on that “ye olde” windows programming. πŸ˜‰

But at least we have all the pdf’s saved to disk now.

Thanks for the work so far.

EDIT – for those using MACs – I just dragged over all the pdfs into iBooks so they all show up in order and pretty easy to search……phew πŸ˜‰
