I was at a French car show on the weekend and to my surprise there were 8 Tractions present. Unlike my car, most of them had some sort of piping between the fender and the body.

What is the correct term for this, and is it doing anything besides making the joint look better?

It is called fender bead and it’s available from most any restoration supplier. There is the cheap stuff that is vinyl wrapped around cotton string. Do not buy it as it will hold moisture against the metal. Buy the one that is solid rubber. It’s available in any length you want. It keeps the fender and body from rubbing against each other and thus causing rust.
