HI trying too fit and time a new distributor, might be a silly question but do they class No1 cly as the one near the water pump or the one near the bulk head, i have been setting it up with the one near the bulk head and the car starts but when you press the acc down it back fires and will not run clean, but on tick over its fine ? and sound very fluffy.
      thanks in advance

            Thank you for that.
when i put the pin in the flywheel for TDC the rotor arm always points towards the bulk head does this mean that the dog on the distrib is 180 out and needs switching?

What is with this membership policing…..

Leave it up to the forum admin to worry about that.

It is well known that I disagree that non members should get access to this forum. In my opinion it reduces the incentive to join the TOC.

                      Den,
Non-members get a “taster” for a limited period of time.
At the end of that period, you can be assured that their accounts are closed and only re-opened if they subsequently decide to join the club.

The same applies to anyone who has any issues or concerns about any aspect of the TOC Forum.

                        Rightio! Back to ignition….

I have bought a fancy looking strobe timing gun. Is there any way I can use this to time the Traction – i.e. are there any marks viewable anywhere that will be good to use….. I am thinking not, but if anyone has done it let me know.

                        Cheers
                        Ian

You need to find your own TDC Ian using no 1 cylinder, then mark it with white on the pulley and block which is what I did.

                            Then the strobe works nicely.

But Dave on the 9th October you posted the following:

Ended up ‘feeling’ for the correct alignment on the timing by hand, by listening to the engine, rather than via a strobe light as my white markings weren’t very good 😆

But the pulley wheels are run from the cam shaft. So this rotates, twice for one revolution of the crankshaft. So will this be OK.
