Good idea. There are several types of antifreeze but if you go to Halfords there are two on the shelves. The silicate type for older cars and the silicate-free organic acid stuff for newer ones. Pick the silicate type. Cheaper to buy it in concentrated form and dilute to taste. A 2 litre bottle is enough for 25% concentration which covers you down to about -18C I think. Good enough for most parts of the UK. It acts as corrosion inhibitor which is a good thing anyway.
There are two drain points – one tap at the bottom of the radiator, and one plug on the side of the block. You can drain enough out using just the radiator tap to make enough room. Best practice would be to drain the block too – I can’t as the thread on my block is mullered and I don’t want to disturb it.
Antifreeze tends to find leaks that water doesn’t – so you might find you have to tighten up a jubilee clip or too – so best to do that first. If you do find leaks, then top up with 25% antifreeze mix rather than just water, to avoid reducing the protection.
