Larry,

It sounds like you have a “3-brush” dynamo.  A clever design that relies on the dynamo to create it’s own magnetic field.  It is also self-regulating in as much as the faster it runs, the lower the output to the magnet windings and the main output reduces as a result. In your shoes I would  want to keep it.

I do have a fully reconditioned 6V unit “on the shelf”, never used since it was rebuilt,  However, in view of the distance, I would suggest you would be better having yours rebuilt locally.
