Hi all,
I’m rebuilding my 11D engine due initially to uneven compression and coolant escaping out the front of the head gasket.
To my surprise on stripping it down I’ve found it’s all new components inside. Clearly the pistons and liners are new. The crank is polished and its all perfectly clean inside…. well except for one significant problem, the oil pickup mesh was completely blocked. This has caused the big ends to pick up on 2 & 3, no crank damage the journals polished back up fine and all measurements are standard. I can only assume this was due to the engine sitting for many years.
The low compression was simply stuck rings. They freed off as soon as I pulled the pistons. The leak I believe was due to the liners being set too high. Overall its clearly all new components but poorly put together?
Anyway I’m now reassembling it with all new bearings and the crank end float is 1.2mm. I believe it should be around half that, could someone confirm this?
Where should I get shims, does anyone have any laying around or do I need to import them?
Happy New Year
Jon
Jon,
End float should be between 0.10and 0.15mm.
If the Club Spares has no stock all the usual Continental suspects do sell them – but most are currently shut for New Year Holidays.
To save time (and probably avoid stupid carriage charges), I suggest you try Citroën Classics (see ad. on page 38 of latest FP). Their website says they re-open at 08.30 on 4th Jan and I have always found them very helpful for engine rebuild components.

Thank you for your reply, I’ll try emailing Citroen Classics.
I’ve just double checked and I’ve actually got 1.6mm end float at present. Is this typical without any shims or does it suggest crank wear?
Jon
I think there is probably no such thing as “typical” for engines which may well have been reconditioned multiple times in the past 70+ years.

I have loads of shims, not sure if they are Perfo, ID, 11d or six. I think they are all the same. If you can give me a size I can check.
Kind regards Philippe 07899 658634 ( Don’t mind a phone call if it’s easier)
After thinking about it (with the heater on in the garage this time) I realised adding shims increases the end float. I need to reduce it and therefore it’s thrust bearing or surface wear.
Many thanks for the replies. I’ll carry on cleaning and painting!
