Hi everyone recently joined as we have just purchased a

Traction Advant Slough built 1953 big six ,

all good but she needs a little TLC , after being used we have noticed an oil leak

which seems to be from the front camshaft seal behind the belt pulley,

has anybody else experienced this if so where could I buy a seal from

(if there is actually a seal there,)  the car has been stood for 10 months

and no other oil leak visible, would appreciate any input to resolve

the issue, looking forward to meet other members in the near future

Assuming it has not been modified, there is no seal at that point.  There is a “thrower” inside which is designed to deflect oil and the hole in the cover has a spiral groove to persuade any escaping oil to feed back down the shaft as it rotates.  Therefore, for the oil to be returned by the spiral, it is critical that the cap is fitted with the shaft perfectly centred in the hole, as the manual explains.

However, two of us have very recently rebuilt our engines and we have modified our covers to accept a modern polymer lip seal.  Both are leak-free.

The seal we used is a standard 50x60x8-R23-NBR Rotary Shaft Seal – Nitrile Rubber (NBR) Metric 50 x 60 x 8 which can be bought from most bearing suppliers for about £6 inc VAT.

The cap will then need to be machined to accept the 60mm OD of the seal.

          STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!

I screwed up – the seal size I quote above was for the CRANKshaft  seal mod.

The seal you require is actually a 30x40x8 R23 NBR shaft seal and the cap has to be modified for the 40mm OD.

If you want further info please ask – may even be able to find some pictures.

Thanks Berni for the info I thought that may not be a seal after looking on traction spares website, I’ve steamed  off the front of the engine so hopefully I can see where it’s coming from, according to the history with the car the head was off two years ago, so I was also thinking it may be from the head,if there is an oil way on the front,  there was a lot of oil thrown around the front so now it’s clean I will run it up and have a look, there was no leak when I first ran it  but after about twenty or so miles on its second trip it just appeared (running out of the bonnet vents) a little disconcerting! Like the sound of your mod I did think the first sizes sounded a bit on the big side for a cam , thanks once again. Martin
