It sounds as if your high tension is arcing at the rotor arm which I believe suggests it is taking a short cut because the correct circuit is restricted somewhere. I suggest you check the plugs, dizzy cap and all ht leads and connections to ensure no breaks and good continuity throughout.
It is not wise to clean the rotor arm contact with anything abrasive as that is likely to compromise the gap and, if you are doing it as often as you say, that damage us likely to quickly affect the performance of the components. I only ever clean the rotor contact edge by gently rubbing it on the side wall of a tyre enough to simply remove any superficial build up and polish the rotor contact without risking removing any of the contact material.
