      Hi Traction experts,

As the title says – I’m looking to fit the correct rear lights to this Traction. They should only provide stop and tail light funtion (the turn signal is provided by the trafficators).

Lucas must manufacture the correct or very similar light fittings. I just need to know what ‘correct’ looks like!

      Thanks, Norman

My Slough ‘53 has Lucas L549. The Lucas manual for the period has Lucas SF38c – the pork pie. (see members area).
My 12 of 39 has Lucas L471 with a pork pie on the registration plate.

Not sure if there is a definitive answer to this question!

          Hi Norman

I think that these are what you might be looking for. These were supplied by LUCAS from about 1950 on. I expect these are repros but they certainly look right. They were fitted to Morris Minors and many others. Here is the link

              Probably Lucas L471 Norman https://tinyurl.com/ujp784h

Hopefully someone can confirm but they are on the club spares list.

Probably Lucas L471 Norman being a big boot car from 1953  https://tinyurl.com/ujp784h

Big Boot cars are different to small boot ones, club spares lists a couple of numbers Lucas L1471 and L549 – the 549 look more ’rounded’ on the corners https://tinyurl.com/vadgwfp than the ones I have seen pics of on cars which tend to be squarer on the corners like the 471 https://tinyurl.com/wfcdfxn

Someone should be able to confirm which are correct for you but from what I have seen the 471 seem to be the ones.

                    Hi Norman,

I can’t find any Lucas reference for 15 tail lights after 1952 except for some confusing references to USA export models which seem to suggest that they may have put a flasher lamp in the 471 with a separate reflector.

However, I think that the 471 brake/tail would have been the obvious fitting for the period. All the pictures of the period that I can find in “Le Grand Livre” and the “Gold Portfolio” have lights that look like the 471

I opted for non-originality as I was not happy to rely on people noticing the semaphore indicator. I worry about the BMW overtaking just as I start to turn right. The originals had already been replaced with 1960’s VW units when I bought it. The previous owner either thought that the supplied units were too small or preferred the look of the VW ones.

Thanks for the info everyone. Appreciate it.

Went for the 549 in the end, as they look period enough and were way cheaper than the 471.

While I wait for their arrival, I shall continue my struggles with refurbing the grill – polishing, fitting new mesh, the chevrons and tape with rivets!
