I bought a set of Aprotec domed pistons last year when I was collecting parts for my Traction rebuild. This was before I knew anything about the traction engine.

      http://www.aprotec.fr

I fitted the pistons and the sleeves but have now been told that I will need to have the head modified as the increase in height of the dome will ram up against the underneath of the head.

The dome is not big and I will measure it when I turn the engine over again (literally turn it over as it is upside down at the moment) but has anyone had experience of installing this type of piston with a standard head.

And if I do need to modify the head, what will I need to do – basically what will I need to ask a machine shop to do?

      thanks

      Ian

        Ian,
        See the following:
        Vol 26 2001-2 Issue 4 http://bit.ly/1IvJVr3
        Vol 26 2001-2 Issue 5 http://bit.ly/1u3Ms9e

The second one has photo’s showing what needs to be ground out of the head to accommodate the dome on the piston.

Also check the spark plug projection, the EYQUEM N 43 F3+1 I bought in France are a couple of mm longer than the NGK’s that I replaced, no problem with flat pistons and a skimmed head but not sure on domed. CTA should be able to confirm though.

Thanks – I will read through these now.

I get to a certain point in the rebuild and then chat to the local French Tractionistes who then give me the teeth sucking, shaking of the head routine and I fall down my “what the hell am I doing” hole again. It is always conflicting info too so I never know what to do.

If any help is need to transfer the recent TOC Tech articles into the articles section then let me know, I can help during the winter months as I only work in the summer.

              Thanks Ian,

We are in the process of finishing the update of the “Tech Torque” disk which was previously available.

It will include all Tech Torque articles from Volume 1, Issue 1 (Feb 1976) to Volume 38, Issue 6 (December 2014) together with a “search engine” into which you enter the keywords that you are interested in.

It is quite probable that to minimise the cost of production and postage the “package” will be available to download rather than a DVD.

I’ll post details on the forum as soon as the update is complete and ready to distribute.

The “duplicate” post has been deleted…..
