      Hello All

Has anyone fitted an electronic ignition kit to their traction? I’ve got an electrical problem and need to renew, leads, plugs, distributor cap, etc and thought I would get rid of the points. If anyone has fitted one of these kits, what issues/problems did you have and which kit did you use?

      Kind regards

      Marc

Using an electronic ignition basically rules out starting by hand using the handle in the future and if your going that route, consider a high output coil as well as a standard one may get hot on long motorway runs (I upgraded mine after getting back from France to help with hot starting issues). It also means you can open the plug gap a mil or 2 so the bigger spark helps with a cleaner burn.

(My car came with an electronic distributor already fitted)

Not sure what type of kits will fit a French car, but if it’s a Slough Light 15 with Lucas Electrics, it should be easy to source a kit

          Dear OSL282

Thank you very much for your response. I will upgrade the coil when fitting the electronic ignition kit. My car is a Slough built, so as you say, it should be fairly simple to find a kit that fits the Lucas distributor.

          Kind Regards

          Marc

There is a “123” electronic ignition system which replaces the complete distributor and is specifically set up for a Traction. It is available in 6 or 12 Volt versions.

I understand there were some initial teething problems but it has now been in production for some time and these have all been ironed out so I believe it to be very reliable. I am aware of a number of TOC members who have installed it and swear by it. As it is a simple swap it also allows the pessimist to carry the old unit in the boot “just in case”.

It is normally available from the TOC Spares – contact Chris Treagust.

I will be trying a 1-2-Spark unit built by a guy in Holland – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSpnbQ5I4Qc

I haver it in my Citroen Dyane (running a turbo) and it works perfectly with adjustments all the way. Will hopefully get him to set it all up for me.

My car is fitted with a ‘Powernition’ (on the car when I bought it 2 years ago) however today the car simply cut out on me.

Have checked and fuel was OK at Carb so started looking at ignition side. – No spark at plugs so swapped the coil for a good one along with the HT lead.

There is power to the coil so it’s looking like my distributor has failed.

Anyone know how to check it please?

                        No and yes Den.

How do I check continuity on the rotor arm please?

Plus there is no ‘spring’ on the rotor arm, it’s flat topped. The carbon contact is sprung and moving freely and you can see the mark of contact on the rotor arm

OK, done that and all seems fine Den.

James has a spare distributor (electronic 123 and one with points/condensor) so we will swap it out next week when he is back from London and see what happens from there.

OK did a further check and with the distributor cap Off and ignition on, the blue LED on the distributor flashes (hard to count but it looked like 12 times or more?) so there is power to it.

Question is, according to CTA on the Traction the LED should be continuously lit, can anyone confirm please?

Also the rotor arm does rotate when the engine is turned over but there is no spark at the plugs.

You have Perfo marked on it.
