      Hi,

My Light 15 was imported from New Zealand in 2009. I have got records from NZ Transport Agency saying the engine number in my car was AB23679. The engine in my car now got engine number AB28233. I’ve been told the engine I’ve got is a 11D. On the engine head it says 11. It is a bit confusing.

Is it possible to tell from the engine number what type the engine in my car got?

      Cheers Bertel

        Hi Bertel,

There are probably people better qualified than me to comment but I will give you what information I have.

What year is your car? Chassis number?

My car (from South Africa is 1955 and is fitted with an older engine No. AM0459 which is a perfo engine dating, I think, from 1948. It would have been fitted with an 11D engine (shell big-ends and mains? and a different head). There may be other differences. The documentation that I have records that the engine was changed from No. 10521 006.  This suggests that a different numbering system may have been adopted for 11D engines.  Maybe others with 11D engines can comment.

            Hi Bertel,

            A little bit more information:

This from Robin Dyke when I was researching my car :

1953 models (big boots now) started at 9-530001 on Monday 13th October 1952

In 1954 they forgot to set the numbering to 54, so they began with 9-531599 on perhaps Monday 19th October 1953

This puts your car well into 1954 production, being the 847th produced in the 1953-4 production year.

I have also seen a UK log book for a 1955 car which has the engine number of : 10521416

This is the same number format as my original 11D engine so I suspect that yours could well be an older Perfo engine (like mine).

            Roger
