Yes me again, nothing seems simple. So got new radiator in and all fine. Try to start her up and very reluctant. Now all I have done is change the filter, situated just before the pump, nothing more nothing less. Tried two neither helps the situation. So my main question is when the inlet pipe to this filter is disconnected I assume I should get fuel coming out of the pipe from the tank. I do not. Have read the topics on here about a filter/pipe near the tank that can cause a problem should I be looking there? If so where the hell is it?  I find it odd that all I have done to the fuel system is change the under bonnet filter.

If all was well before – and the filter isi installed the right way, it sounds to me as if the fuel has simply run back into the tank (blame Newton),  leaving the pipe empty and the pump,  being full of air, is struggling to prime the system.

Try priming it with the hand lever until fuel reaches the pump – and beyond.

If that fails pressurise the tank with the pump outlet disconnected. It does not require a great deal of pressure to lift fuel to the pump where the valves will (should?) stop it returning immediately..  If no air-line available, mouth over filler and blow hard and long.

French models do have a rubber elbow on top of the tank which is prone to perishing after 50+ years, allowing air to be drawn instead of fuel.  It is under the plate in the centre of the boot but, if it was OK before, it is unlikely to be the problem in this instance – but not impossible. Pressurising the tank will reveal if it is split as fuel will be forced out.

Well I could have been led a merry dance up the wrong path. Checked fuel system, pressurised tank etc and some fuel goes into filter and stays there, The glass bowl before the pump is full and if I carry on cranking it fuel comes out of the small copper pipe sticking out of the inlet manifold.  Disconnected pipe entering carburettor and fuel flowing so think fuel system is ok.  So what now me thinks. As I was thinking this I put my hand on the coil, my that was rather hot after only a few cranks. So thinking cap on. The coil checks out okish doing resistance checks but the capacitor does not. So I may have found the culprit.

Unfortunately cannot find any details on the capacitor. The coil is a COL 201, I cannot find any detail of what capacitor to use with this coil. So will order a new coil and a capacitor that looks like the current one. Suitable coils are obviously COL 201 and Lucas equivalent DLB101. Now the DLB101 capacitor seems to be DCB 101c. So will sort those out and take it from there.

Hi David – which capacitor? The one in the distributor or is it one on the coil?

If there is a capacitor on the coil it will be for radio noise suppression and you can take it off and forget about it.

              Hi

Was the one on the side of the distributor. Not actually faulty anyway, culprit was the coil, only discovered it a few minutes ago. I thought coils either worked or they did not. Well this one is a real rogue.Engine might fire for a few seconds then die other times nothing. Temperature of coil made no difference. So put in the new coil I got this morning and all is fine. Fires up first time and runs very nicely. Had a short trip out in her and all is well. Not the best of weeks as the missus backed her Audi into a wall and made a right mess.’ It was the shoes I was wearing ‘ any excuse.

Glad to know the Traction is finally sorted.

                Audis were always shoe-critical.

                Shame about the wall.

Train station wall got away unscathed.
