I would be interested in opinions as to if I am being an old fart, as my wife often calls me.
I am intending fitting a water temp and oil pressure gauge and decided on the gauge pictured. The magnolia I thought goes nicely with
the cream of the instrument fascia. Pic 1 shows a screenshot from the manufacturers website of said gauge.
Pic 2 shows the one I received. As can be seen mine has an extra cream bezel inside the chrome one as shown by the red arrow.
To my mind on mine less of the gauge fascia is visible, even moreso as I will not be looking straight at it.
Am I making something out of nothing?
Dave,
Your wife may be right in general but, in this instance, it does look as if less of the dial is visible in picture 2.
If that really is an issue for you, could you open it up and remove the offending ring? …. or contact the supplier and have a moan. If they can’t supply “as advertised” they may be minded to offer a discount. Good luck.
Meanwhile, I shall coninue driving in blissful ignorance of water temperature and oil pressure ‘cos I reckon the trouble with fitting gauges is they give you more to worry about.
B…..
You may well be right but I have taken the plunge so on I plod. It gets more complicated as I go. The water temp bulb has a 5/8UNF thread so had to buy a 5/8 tap and the correct drill bit a 37/64. The oil is the same except using 1/8NPT. Anyway I digress I too thought of taking out the magnolia ring, hopefully without damaging the chrome bezel, that does not look particularly easy. Thenb there is another priblem I think the madnolia ring is actually holding the fascia in place . As you can see from the attached pic there is a sort of leg going between the two of them. There are 3 of this legs around the dial. I am assuming if I got to remove the magnolia ring the fascia could then move about. I think one can just about make out what I am on about, the leg is highlighted by the red arrow.
And as I have got your attention can you tell me the size of the radiator hoses are they 40mm?
Thanks
Dave,
It does look as if the dial face is perhaps held in position by the “madnolia” bezel. If so, we’re that bezel removed, a couple of spots of superglue or hot glue would probably serve a similar purpose.
Having had my attention caught – but finding myself unable to answer the subsequent question – I dug out and measured an old 4-cyl rad and water pump. I can confirm both hose connections are 40mm.
Happy drilling and tapping.
B…..
Thanks I thought it was 40mm but could not find a definitive answer anywhere on the web.
Ah drilling and tapping what joy! I am tempted to take the bezel off but not until I hear from Smiths, now Caerbont, and the people who sold it to me.
I’ve just realised, your posts are in the 6-cyl section of the forum and I checked hose sizes on the rad and pump of a 4. Fortunately (for some), my 6 engine is out giving easy access, so I was also able to measure hose fittings for a 6. ….
…. and they appear to be 43mm.
