Old rubber

Is there anything that softens up old rubber? I’d like to replace the petrified rubber that holds the door windows into their bases and I’d rather not crack the windows. Petrol? Lacquer thinner? Acetone? Good wishes? I tried yelling at them but that didn’t work.

My uncle (long dead) used to use glycerine on the white rubber bumpers of his (now my) Triumph Herald. It seemed to work – they haven’t turned to dust like most. I keep meaning to try it on the window rubbers of my New Yorker which was a desert car and sounds like it has the same problem as yours. Worth a try.

I soaked mine in WD40, the back ones where really tight where they had not been used.

Didn’t work, but what did work was laying the window flat on a bench and using a hammer and block of wood I was able to get the base frames off without busting the glass. Rusted to hell, though but I was able to sort them out with POR-15. Now I’m waiting for the new rubber bits and then they go back in the car. Thanks for the suggestions!
