hi, new to avant ownership and about to have power assisted steering fitted to an 11BL. Following that, I would like to fit an after market smaller steering wheel. The steering boss is the issue and I need help, please. Does the centre plastic boss pull straight out? (someone suggested it is screwed in?) Any pointers to suppliers of suitable steering wheels and bosses would be appreciated.

      thanks

Nothing is straight forward with a Traction as you will find out 🙂

The centre boss will depend on which wheel is fitted, if a standard Citroen one, try turning the centre anti clockwise and see if it comes loose. Simply levering it out may damage it.

On an aftermarket ‘Quillery’ wheel the centre boss is like a horn push and spring loaded so push in and turn slightly anti clockwise and it should pop up.

Why fit a smaller steering wheel though, for access?

It will probably have a rotary control added so you can wind the power down (the few I have seen have one) so you can wind the power off when rolling along. I have considered having one fitted but other items needing attention  have swallowed up any funds that may have been available to do it…..

…. and if it an early car with a 3-spoke steering wheel there are three grubscrews holding the centre in place.

Thanks for the information. Tried unscrewing but eventually found that centre boss disc had been secured with a large blob of silicone adhesive! I guess not to original Citroen spec…

However can now get at fixing bolts, so onward and upward.

              Hi Tony

You may need a puller to remove Steering Wheel after removal of large nut.

For something smaller with a ‘period’ look have a look at Bluemels https://www.s-v-c.co.uk/category/bluemel-wheels/ –  14″ or 15.5″ – I have seen a Slough Traction with one in the past.

The period French ones from Quillery (like the one I have fitted) are circa 17.5″ same as the Citroen original so probably not what your after.

I recall reading in FP that one Tyrone Parker-Lott had a “Quartic” steering wheel (ex Austin Allegro) in his Light 15 “to complement the rectangular instruments”.

I always found that anything that Tyrone P Lott said, needed to be taken with a pinch; nay a truck load, of salt??
