      Hi all,

It is a well known problem that the Slough (Lucas) wiper wheelboxes are not the ultimate in design and, as they wear, the wipers have a tendency to jump out of synchronisation. As far as I can ascertain, this part number of wheelbox was only used on the Slough Citroëns and some Allard and Daimler models. It is quite possible, however that the housings from other part numbers are interchangeable.

I believe that this problem is due to the cable wearing away the die-cast zinc alloy housing resulting in poor engagement between wheel and cable.

I understand that one possible solution is a small length of spring steel inserted under the cable. Does anyone have a more elegant solution? Does anyone know what an unworn one looks like? Was it radiused to fit the cable or was it flat?

        Hi Roger

The wiper motor used on the Light 15 is common to a number of cars, Alvis, Triumph TR2, Swallow Doretti, and split screen Morris Minor and the wheel boxes may be similar apart from the manual override on the Citroen. Plenty of split screen Morris parts about and the wiper motor lives behind the dashboard so it often in good condition.

        Cheers

          Hi Richard,

          Thanks for the feedback.

My problem is not the motor.  I rebuilt that and had a great time re-fitting the 2 sets of 15 loose needle rollers.

The wheelboxes on the Citroens have limited application.

There are a lot of similar ones with different length shafts, knobs etc. and these appear to use the same main front section of the casting.

I have been thinking that the problem is wear on the casting but, as I have been writing this and looking at a dismantled wheelbox, I am now wondering whether the wear on the casting may be a symptom and not the cause. I am wondering whether the problem is insufficient support of the cable inner where it passes under the wheel and relies on the clamping of the outer for support. Quite possibly, the inner is not meant to contact the casing at all

Unfortunately, I am going to have to dismantle my system to find out.

          Roger
