My 53 LHD Normale has a Marchal spotlight and foglight.

Was that the normal thing to do…one of each and were they a common period addition.

Trying to decide take off or replace!

      Can anyone recommend suppliers please.

I have one of each on my 54 11B. There was a hole through the body on the passenger side A pillar for one when I got the car but the outer hole had a small plate welded over it but the hole went through to the windscreen frame. I finally found a European spotlight and installed it. The brand is Midnight Sun and it’s from Holland. I can’t say if the car had a spotlight when new, but maybe. I have one spotlight on the driver’s side of the front bumper. Why one? I think it looks good. So I would leave the lights on your car, they may have been there a long time. But if you are looking for a supplier try this guy- he’s usually at the Beaulieu autojumble.

          Hi 1515

If they are Marchal I’m guessing that they will be 1 x 660 model and 1 x 660/760 model – the only difference being the layout of the prisms in the glass. They are often available on Ebay, believe it or not but they are never cheap! I managed to buy a French spotlight for the windscreen pillar and I also have an American one which is almost identical (a leftover from one of the WWII militarys I used to own)  but I’m now in two minds about drilling a hole through the pillar.

Larry have you a picture of yours? It might persuade me one way or the other…..

Here you go. The spotlight is turned on by the dashboard Plafonnier switch as that was never connected to anything due to the car having a sunroof.  There is a relay for it on the bulkhead to the left of the battery. It’s pretty bright and it sure lights up that side of the engine if I ever needed to do that. I’ve always like movable spotlights- my first experience was the one mounted on my aunt’s 1955 Mercury when I was a kid. The driving light is pretty bright too. I don’t know why but I like the look of a single driving light.

I read somewhere that having a spotlight fitted like that was often a sign that car had been used by the police – particularly the Belgian ones. The single driving spot could be another sign.
Pic – not quite as glamorous as your aunt’s Mercury…..

Hi Paul- It may have been  a police car at some point- it has an 80 amp dynamo probably to power radio equipment. The driving light I added myself after buying it at the Beaulieu autojumble a few years ago.
