I am presently working on a friend’s recently acquired 54 11B Commerciale. I have taken the brakes apart and found that the rear trailing shows have full length linings. Is that correct? The front trailing shoes have the normal half-linings. I would appreciate any advice as I don’t recall doing a long-wheelbase cars brakes before.

        Larry,

What size are the drums?  I understand some Commerciales were fitted with 12″ rear drums instead of the standard 10″.

According to section 16 in the spares book, 12″ lining reference 438592, 287.6m x 35mm wide, was fitted on all 4 rear shoes, this lining replaced an earlier version which was 317.5mm long, on all shoes.

Interesting info from Bernie. Been looking on Yellow Box Engineering web site and they do a replacement ‘floating’ brake shoe kit which has full length linings as well Larry, not cheap though.

I had measured the drums and they are 12 inch so I had my friend take them to the re-liners. Should be back early next week. The drums look OK, the cylinders were all stuck and the right rear was leaking. The fronts are ok with plenty of lining so we won’t re-line those.

Another question- both trailing shoes have riveted-on clips? that appear to be for holding the parking brake lever. Both are twisted and mangled so I think I can grind out the rivets and bin them. I’ve never seen these on rear brake shoes before- is it a long-wheelbase thing? How important are they?

Here you go- Whatever their purpose was, they no longer look fit for it. 001

                    Larry,

Very interesting, I’ve never seen this arrangement before and am now most curious.

Maybe it is worth sending the pics to John Gillard as I doubt he has time to sit and read the Forum.

I discussed them with Roger Williams and later ground them off with an angle grinder. Reassembly went well, the brakes are bled and all is OK- thanks for all the help!
