Hi Mark,
Hope this helps – just spent the afternoon working on my dash (a major refurb of the horrific work done whilst mine was out in Egypt in the 60’s).

On my car the gauges are all mounted into a long frame which has two end lugs that then mount onto the metal dashboard panel. On my frame there are 2 screw holes at each end but I have a spare frame that only has 1 screw hole on each end
The chrome bezel plate screws onto the back of the wooden dash – which you then hope will line up with the gauges when the wooden dash is bolted over the metal backplate.
I’m just about to do a cut-n-shut on two gauge frames to (hopefully) insert an oil pressure gauge and water temp gauge into a matching cluster.
P.S. having just swapped out the dynamo for an alterntor I now need to either recalibrate the old -20-0-+20 ammeter to cope with much larger output of the alternator or swap the inners out of the gauge – all help/experience/opinions most welcome.
Cheers,
Paul Gibbinson
