I’m looking to replace my sump gasket but the workshop manual instructions are confusing.  Any advice to simplify the process would be welcome, especially as I shall be lying under the car to do it.

You won’t like it, but my best advice is to take the engine out.

Even if you manage to get the sump off and past the rear cross member housing the torsion bars, the long side gaskets are designed to be trapped under the main bearing caps and the bearing cap seals needs to be offered up and cut to length in situ.

In my experience, the job can only be done properly with the engine out and upside-down.   Sorry.

I believe you are located about an hour from me.  I have an engine stand which facilitates engine rotation and would be prepared to lend it if you chose to bite the bullet.

            Dear Bernie

Thank you for your kind offer but I’m too old to take an engine out. I’ll see if replacing the bearing cap gaskets will be enough.

              David,

Once fitted and used for a long time, cork gaskets will have been crushed, taking on a permanent set and making it difficult to achieve a good seal a second time.  They are also likely to be extremely brittle and subsequently prone to damage when the sump is removed.

So, although I don’t recommend it, if you do tackle it from below, you might consider cutting the old sump gaskets flush with the bearing caps, and trimming the new ones to suit.  When re-assembling, butter the ends with a coating of non-setting sealing compound such as Blue Hylomar where they meet the bearing caps.

              Bon courage.
