Once fitted and used for a long time, cork gaskets will have been crushed, taking on a permanent set and making it difficult to achieve a good seal a second time. They are also likely to be extremely brittle and subsequently prone to damage when the sump is removed.
So, although I don’t recommend it, if you do tackle it from below, you might consider cutting the old sump gaskets flush with the bearing caps, and trimming the new ones to suit. When re-assembling, butter the ends with a coating of non-setting sealing compound such as Blue Hylomar where they meet the bearing caps.
