Although this arrangement offers a relatively weatherproof seal, the moment you open the boot the top seal is lost and any water on the top of the boot lid is spectacularly dumped through the gap onto your contents.
Rule 1 – always wipe excess water off before opening the boot
Rule 2 – place a waterproof sheet over the boot contents to direct water into the rear well from where it will drain.
