Battery cable connection to the starter

On my 49 BL starter, the threaded stud is quite small and I think it’s not up to the job of carrying the proper voltage from the battery. The nut holding the cable to it is only 10MM, whereas the nut holding the cable on my 54 B is 14MM.  Also when trying to start the 49 there is some arcing at the connection. I wonder if it’s possible to have a heavier stud installed on the 49 starter?

I assume you have a cable operated mechanical switch mounted on the starter body.

If so, I have never seen one with such a small connector.  As you say, it is usually an 8mm thread.  I wonder if the switch has been replaced at some time with something “non-standard”.

If you can’t easily change the stud, I would suggest replacing the switch unit.

This one has a starter solenoid with a push button. I changed it myself because when I had the pull cable going through the switch, I could not pull it hard enough to start the car.

I’m afraid I’m out of my depth if we are not talking about the original hardware.

Obviously too late now, but I would have wanted to get the old switch to work correctly rather than introduce another element in the system.

I recently had a similar problem with the 6 starter switch.  It transpired the Tufnol cam was badly worn and, in the end it was a simple fix.

The 4-cyl switches I have had were simpler with just a sprung leaf contact.  They tended to suffer from pitting of the fixed contact combined with deposits accumulating.  That was generally cured by polishing with fine emery.  In extremely pitted cases, the fixed contact could be rotated to present a fresh contact surface.
