Carb fuel inlet

Good evening.

whilst out for a drive yesterday, a strong smell petrol brought us to a sputtering halt. Upon investigating I found that the  copper inlet pipe had pull out of the casting. It can now be push and pulled in and out quite easily.

I looking for some advice on the best way to repair this problem, if possible.

To confirm it’s a solex 32 carb and it’s the fuel inlet brass pipe.

OK, most are push fit but I have seen some with a screw in fitting. You could try using something like ‘liquid metal’ or ‘Devcon’ to secure it back in or look online for an 1/8th BSP to  6/7mm fitting like https://tinyurl.com/yyaozty6 and carefully adapt the carb top to take it.

In the meantime I have a spare carb top (copy not original Solex) to get you back on the road whilst you sort yours out if you e mail me at: osl282.info @ gmail.com

If you’re like me and you don’t like the idea of fuel in close proximity to the exhaust manifold, you can go for SS Braided PTFE lined Hose using a 5/16″ to AN -6 (male) Hardline Adapter. Yes, I know it doesn’t look terribly original, but it won’t leak!

I also have a spare old Solex carb which you can have. It’s complete, but distorted, so only good for spares.

OFF TOPIC: is that a Ceramic coated manifold Norman and if so does it make a difference to the engine bay/cabin heat?

Site logged me out after I hit submit, so lost the post.

Only run the engine up to temperature a few times, so don’t know how the exhaust manifold will behave, but will let you know once I finally get it on the road!

I’m still struggling with the exhaust fitment. I’ve only got two ‘hangars’ – one at the end of the long straight piece, just in front of the rear wheel arch, and one to support the tail pipe. It doesn’t seem enough. I can see two old straps in the cavity forward of the fuel tank. For the suspension maybe? The parts diagram only shows the two suspension points. Confusing!

The inlet pipe coming out of the carb is not a one-off and, of course, is not just a Traction problem.

And presumably we’ll see more problems with brass pipes coming out of aluminium casting because of this…

Justin,

I see this problem quite often. Clean up the brass pipe and the bore of the aluminium casting and glue it in there with Loctite 243. You could use a stronger grade if you wanted.
