As we know you can get the MOT history from the DVLA website. I am just wondering if they actually note that a car is LHD and the distance is in km and not miles as it always quotes miles?

All testing stations have the facility to enter recorded distance in either miles or kilometers… but many do not realise (and I guess some probably can’t be bothered)

My 15/6 is recorded in km but, when I sent my speedo away for servicing, as a temporary measure I fitted a French style instrument cluster graduated in miles per hour and recording trip and total distances in miles.   (The fuel gauge also reads “Empty” to  “Full” and is graduated in quarters of a tank rather than showing actual litres).

When I explained the reason for the anomalous recorded distance to the tester he just changed the units on the system. Then, when I refitted the original instrument, he changed the units back to km again. Simples ! !

You are very welcome to view the MOT history for my 6, registration number VXS 274, where you will see both km and miles recorded at different times.

As you say I reckon it does not dawn on the tester that with a car say being LHD it may actually record km and not miles. I suppose one would have to point it out to him, or her. I see you get yours done religiously each year, I wonder how many others do?

“Religiously” is probably a bit too strong a term but yes, I do aim to get both the Traction and Yellow Peril tested anually.

Although I have the luxury of a pit at home, it is neither full length nor deep enough go be able go stand up completely straight so the MOT test is a once-a-year opportunity to inspect the underside(s) in relative comfort.  It also provides a second opinion from an independant person who is actually charged with confirming the vehicle is safe to use.

Finally, I would like to think that, in the event of the roadworthiness ever being called into question – whatever the reason, I can demonstrate having made every effort to ensure, and maintain, compliance.
